Elastomeric membrane roofing vs EPDM roofing
Our master roofers install elastomeric membranes from the manufacturer SOPREMA as well as EPDM membranes from Carlisle. These roofing systems can be installed on residential, commercial, industrial or institutional flat roofs (or very low-slope roofs).
Our master roofers have completed advanced training in SOPREMA installation techniques (Quality + Safety Alliance Program) and hold advanced installer certification. We have also completed Carlisle training and are fully certified to carry out professional installations.
Elastomeric membrane roofing vs EPDM roofing
Elastomeric membrane roofing is a two-ply system made of polymer-modified bitumen (SBS), which is heat-fused to a base layer of bitumen using a torch. This flat roof system offers many advantages: it is a high-quality, 100% watertight system that reflects the sun’s heat and helps keep buildings cooler (white membrane). It can also be used as a rooftop terrace, as it is resistant to foot traffic and tearing. However, it is not recyclable in our province and is more expensive than EPDM roofing. SOPREMA elastomeric membrane roofing is highly advanced and backed by excellent warranties.
EPDM roofing, on the other hand, is a single-ply system made of thick synthetic rubber that resists tearing, UV degradation from sunlight and hail. It also maintains its elasticity in extremely cold temperatures. With annual maintenance, EPDM roofing can last up to 50 years. Light-colored EPDM roofing reflects the sun’s heat, helping keep buildings cool in the summer. Its main advantages are that it can be installed directly over an existing asphalt roof, it is recyclable and its installation cost is lower than elastomeric membrane roofing.
Preventive maintenance and repairs
To ensure the long-term watertight performance of your elastomeric membrane roofing or EPDM roofing, it is extremely important to have it maintained at least once a year. SOPREMA even recommends two inspections annually, one in the fall and the other in early spring.
